About the film
Alexander Pushkin's 1836 novel comes to the screen: the pretender Yemelyan Pugachev has declared himself Emperor Peter III and gathered Cossacks and fugitive serfs to his cause. At the remote Belogorsk fortress, the young officer Pyotr Grinyov falls for Masha, the commandant's daughter, unaware of how close the rebellion already is. Released in Russian as Русский бунт (Russian Revolt), with Vladimir Mashkov as Pugachev.
